Annual Mental Health Transformation Conference Summary

On May 15, 2012, The Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, Florida Partners in Crisis Miami-Dade Chapter, the DCF Substance Abuse and Mental Health Program and the Consumer Network hosted The Mental Health Transformation in Action Conference, Awards Ceremony and Luncheon for Consumers, Law Enforcement and Community Partners. Magellan, Larkin Community Hospital, South Florida Behavioral Health Network and Westcare Foundation the University of Miami Behavioral Health program sponsored the event.

The event celebrated Mental Health Month and approximately 400 attendees participated in the conference. This conference was evidence that mental health recovery and change in the system of care is possible through the camaraderie and unification of consumers, families, stakeholders, providers, and law enforcement. Attendees were energized by Sharon Wise passionate discussion on strength, hope and recovery for all consumers.  She also discussed emerging opportunities within the peer specialist movement on a national and global scale for agencies and stakeholders.

The conference was followed by the Awards Ceremony and Luncheon with Special Guest Speaker Sharon Wise. County Court Judge Steve Leifman, a long–time champion of people with mental illnesses who recently served the Florida Supreme Court as a special advisor on mental health issues in the justice system, served as the Master of Ceremonies.
