On September 13, 2011 we held our 4th Annual Recovery in the Arts Exhibit celebrating Recovery Month. Over 25 consumers displayed their photographs and papier mâché in the gallery to showcase their art while expressing their own mental health recovery!

Annual Mental Health Transformation Conference Summary

On May 13, 2010, The Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, Florida Partners in Crisis Miami-Dade Chapter, the DCF Substance Abuse and Mental Health Program and the Consumer Network hosted The Mental Health Transformation in Action Conference, Awards Ceremony and Luncheon for Consumers, Law Enforcement and Community Partners. Magellan and the University of Miami Behavioral Health program sponsored the event.

The event celebrated Mental Health Month and approximately 400 attendees participated in the conference. This conference was evidence that mental health recovery and change in the system of care is possible through the camaraderie and unification of consumers, families, stakeholders, providers, and law enforcement. Attendees were energized by Dr. Frese’s passionate discussion on recovery and eliminating stigma through community education and consumer empowerment.

The program began with the opening session featuring Frederick J. Frese, Ph.D. who is an activist on behalf of persons with serious mental illness on a local, state, and national level and followed by a breakout session for consumers, families and stakeholders. The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) breakout session focused on Combat Veterans in the Community.

The conference was followed by the Awards Ceremony and Luncheon with Special Guest Speaker Charles Nemeroff M.D., Ph.D. Chairman, from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. County Court Judge Steve Leifman, a long–time champion of people with mental illnesses who recently served the Florida Supreme Court as a special advisor on mental health issues in the justice system, served as the Master of Ceremonies.

Our very own Osvaldo Milá, Peer Specialist at Douglas Gardens Community Mental Health Center, received the Advocate of the Year award.

The Department of Children and Families, in cooperation with the Florida Peer Network, is proud to be hosting Building Capacity for Trauma-Informed Systems of Care, six regional seminars throughout the state.

The Consumer Network in Miami is now expanding to a Statewide Consumer Network as a result of a recently awarded SAMHSA Grant. Therefore, in order to advance in the implementation of the Mental Health Transformation/Recovery Initiative, we highly encourage consumers, peer specialists, and program staff/supervisors to attend this training. We also want to expand these services to Veterans, individuals with a history of trauma, and those involved in the Criminal Justice system as part of the grant and the Recovery Movement.

About WRAP:
This is a unique opportunity to learn principles of recovery and understand how to shift out of a “chronic illness” mindset into a "wellness" mindset that supports recovery for everyone. Facilitating and implementing WRAP within your agencies will assist consumers in becoming accountable in the decision-making and problem-solving situations in their lives. About Advanced Directives:
A Mental Health Advance Directive is a legal document that allows a person to state his or her preferences regarding mental health care before a mental health crisis occurs, when one may be unable to understand treatment choices or make decisions. It is an effective and primary method of self-management and self-advocacy during crisis and allows a person to plan now, while competent, for a future time when capacity for decision-making may be lost. Treatment choices are made in the present but acted on in the future. The training will involve learning the material and completing an advanced directive on site if desired.

CEU's for Peer Specialists
For the first time, continuing education credits (CEU's) will be provided during this training for PEER SPECIALISTS that are already certified by the Florida Certification Board. The attendance certificate from the training will also count towards training hours for those Peer Specialists who want to apply for board certification in the future.

Grant Announcement!

Fresh Start of Miami-Dade, Inc. is pleased to announce the award of a "Statewide Consumer Grant" from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) beginning October 2009.

The goal is to become a leader in the Statewide Recovery Movement advocating for culturally and linguistically competent services to underserved populations. The target population is comprised of adults with severe and persistent mental illnesses including veterans, victims of trauma, and individuals involved with the court system.

As guided by the WRAP model (i.e., Wellness Recovery Action Planning), The Consumer Network will be educating and empowering peers and building new infrastructure that will give priority to peer and provider collaboration. This will provide the opportunity for awareness, accessibility, and consumer leadership to promote changes to current statewide policy. The Consumer Network will focus on transforming the current system of care to a true consumer-driven system.

The Fresh Start Consumer Network of Florida will provide recovery, resiliency, and empowerment trainings & activities in English, Spanish, and Creole throughout the grant period to consumers, stakeholders, and providers in the State of Florida’s largest cities- Miami, Tampa, and Orlando.

Trainings will include: WRAP 3-day Introduction and 5-day Facilitator Trainings, WRAP for Veterans, Peer Specialist Training, Leadership & Advanced Directives.

CREATIVE INSPIRATION LEADS TO HEALTHY MINDS: USING ART TO SPEAK OUT FOR RECOVERY WHILE GIVING HOPE & SHARING SUCCESS

~Miami’s consumers of mental health and substance abuse services showcase their recovery through artwork at the Second Annual Recovery in the Arts exhibit.~

August 23, 2009 (Miami, Fla) – In celebration of National Recovery Month this September, Recovery in the Arts will unveil a series of acrylic paintings, photography, and paper maché art created by adult consumers with mental illnesses in Miami-Dade County. The Gallery Opening is Thursday, September 3, 2009, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the South Tower lobby of the Rohde Building, located at 401 NW 2nd Ave, Miami. At the opening ceremonies Representative Oscar Braynon will discuss important issues and concerns regarding mental health in our community. The exhibit and other related events throughout the month are sponsored by the Florida’s Department of Children and Families (DCF), Consumer Network of Miami-Dade, and National Art Exhibitions for the Mentally Ill (NAEMI).

Additional events at Rohde Building include:
• FREE Art Exhibit, weekdays 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. throughout the month of September,
• Behavioral Health Fair, where artists and community organizations join together to showcase mental health and recovery programs throughout Miami-Dade, will be held on Thursday, September 17 from 11a.m. – 2 p.m.,
• Closing Ceremonies will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. & will include music and drama activities by consumers with mental illness.

“The Recovery through the Arts Workshops exemplify the extraordinary talent that people with mental health issues exhibit,” noted Sandra McQueen-Baker, Consumer Network Coordinator. “The photography is breathtaking and the elaborately decorated paintings & paper maché sculptures illustrate an intense and bold artistic expression--their work is absolutely spectacular!”
The Consumer Network and NAEMI sponsored several art workshops on photography, painting, and paper maché throughout the summer. The Consumer Network recruited local artists and educators including Santiago “Chago” Rodriguez, painter/paper maché artist, and Enrique San Roman, photographer, to facilitate the first of these kinds of workshops for consumers with mental illness. Both artists generously volunteered their time and talent to guide the over 30 adult consumers to create wonderful works of art. The artists were recruited from various substance abuse and mental health providers throughout our community.

“DCF’s primary focus is assisting in strengthening our families,” stated Silvia Quintana, supervisor of the DCF Circuit 11 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Program Office. “These mediums were used as an artistic and therapeutic tool to help participants express themselves, find ways to cope with their illness, and work towards recovery through the artistic experience. We need to continue to support different, creative ways to help our vulnerable people grow to be healthy individuals and get to their goals of personal growth and responsibility.”

About The Consumer Network of Miami-Dade: Founded in 2006, The Consumer Network is a consumer representative organization, managed and operated by people who share a commitment to making a difference by reaching out to consumers, families, advocates, government, and the community at large. About DCF: The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is dedicated to protecting the vulnerable, promoting strong and economically self-sufficient families, and advancing personal and family recovery and resiliency. The Department provides invaluable services and assistance, which are indispensable to our community. Our Substance Abuse and Mental Health Program is dedicated to developing a comprehensive system of care which includes mental health and substance abuse services to adults and children, as well as prevention, emergency/detoxification, and treatment services for individuals and families at risk of or affected by substance abuse or mental health issues. Other DCF services include responding to and investigating allegations of child abuse, as well as licensing foster homes and overseeing the care of children victimized by abuse, abandonment and neglect. Our own Consumer Network Coordinator, Sandra McQueen-Baker, along with Cindy Schwartz of the Jail Diversion Program, went to Santa Cruz, California this past March to attend the Advanced WRAP Facilitator Training Seminar provided by the Mary Ellen Copeland Center. Both Sandra and Cindy were WRAP Facilitators and met the requirements to become Advanced Facilitators. As a result of this training, they will be able to train new WRAP Facilitators in the 5-day Training!

Congrats to the first two people in Florida with this certification!

Art Exhibit October 2008

YOUTH AND ADULTS USE ART TO VOICE THEIR EXPERIENCES AND SPEAK OUT FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION AND MENTAL HEALTH RECOVERY

Art exhibit by Miami’s adult consumers of mental health services and Haitian youth prove that “Art Works” in Substance Abuse Prevention and Mental Health Recovery.

~In celebration of “Red Ribbon Week” and “World Mental Health Day” in October, the Florida’s Department of Children and Families (DCF) and The Miami Coalition for a Safe and Drug-Free Community (TMC) will unveil a series of acrylic paintings created by Haitian youth and Paper Maché Art by adult consumers with mental illness in Miami-Dade County. The Gallery Opening will be held on Friday, October 3, 2008, from 12:00 pm to 1:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Rohde Building, located at 401 NW 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33128. In addition, an Artist Forum, where the artists will voice their insight and discuss the meanings behind their art, will be held on Tuesday, October 21 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 p.m. at the same location.

The paintings and Paper Maché art will be on display FREE of charge throughout the month of October.

The Florida Peer Network is interested in connecting with artists who use their art to support their recovery. As part of our campaign to fight stigma and discrimination we are seeking artists who would be interested in having their art displayed on college campuses.

We will be participating in two special projects during the month of October. The first is a showing of art created by individuals dealing with psychiatric disabilities who use their art as part of their recovery. We are interested in choosing 4-5 artists to participate in a special event on several college campuses. Artists whose work is selected will receive $100 and will have the opportunity to sell their work at the showings or on our website virtual gallery.

The second event is for young adults interested in photography. We would like 5-6 young adults (18-30) to create photo essays that portray the importance of having someone special in your life that helps support your recovery. The theme of the campaign is "What a Difference a Friend Makes". Participants will be supplied with disposable cameras and will be paid $100 for their work.

The DCF Circuit 11 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Program Office presented an ART WORKSHOP on The Art of Paper Maché with Artist & Educator, CHAGO, who volunteered his time and artistic skills.

The workshop ran for four (4) Wednesdays, from May 14, 21, 28, through June 4, 2008. We had around 11 participants.

The Consumer Network members are still talking about the great time that they had in the workshop. It was a fantastic opportunity
